Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate!
Well, it’s June, folks, and if you got a raise or bonus this year, you’ve probably received it, and it’s showing up on your check now. But my question is, did you get what you wanted? My deeper question is, did you ask for what you wanted? My name is Christopher Lawrence, and I’m with Change My Life Coaching, and today I wanted to talk to you about negotiating and asking for what you want in your career.
Are You Asking For What You Want?
It is unbelievable to me how many people are not asking for what they want. And it is absolutely true that when you ask for what you want, you are more likely to get it. This has been shown by research that’s been done socially on asking for raises. So as a part of this, if you’re really struggling with how to ask, I wanted to do a little bit of a book review. If you haven’t heard of it, there is a book called “Never Split the Difference” and it’s by Chris Voss.
Negotiate As If Your Life Depended On It
So, “Never Split the Difference, Negotiate As If Your Life Depended On It,” and it’s by Chris Voss, V-O-S-S. This book is super interesting and super entertaining because Chris starts with his stories of being an FBI hostage negotiator. And he was really good at what he did, and now he owns a negotiating organization and he trains people on negotiation. So you’re going to get sucked in by the FBI stories. And then he’s going to teach you how to negotiate like a pro star. And we’re not talking old-school, 1980s tactics. We are talking about modern, accurate scientifically proven forms of negotiating.
I think you’re gonna be really entertained by it. I listened to it on Audible. I don’t normally listen to books twice. I kind of get what I need. I am already listening to this book a second time because there is so much information in it that I just can’t wait to get it.
Begin Negotiating
So, folks, I hope this is really helpful. I need you to get out there and ask for what you want. And some people think, well, it’s not raised and bonus time. Well, that doesn’t mean that you can’t ask for a raise. It doesn’t mean that. All it means is that you need to begin negotiating, right? Maybe there are a few hoops that you have to jump through. So what, it’s just a few steps, just a couple of forms. So, folks, I want you to get out there and ask for what you need, ask for what you want. Let me know how it goes.
